Perspective

I've been suffering from a serious case of overthinking. Everything that can be thought about, has been thought about. I feel on edge, restless, distracted. I just can't seem to shut off this silly little mind of mine.

I'm all for planning and thinking things through, but when it gets to the stage when those niggling worries are interrupting every single part of your day and bringing you down, something needs to change.

I'm lucky in that I know exactly why my mind has been running wild lately. It's an annoying little thing called boredom. After 5 months of constant socialising, returning to England to a quiet house has begun to take it's toll. And what would have been filled with the distraction of someone else's presence, has instead been filled with my overactive thoughts. Remember that thing that that person said to you that wasn't very nice? They clearly don't like you. Let's worry about this for the rest of the day until you dread the time you have to interact with them again.

But I've found the key to stopping all this overthinking: PERSPECTIVE.

What am I worried about? That people don't like me? That something bad might happen? That I won't be prepared for the worst?

But really, what is the point of worrying? I read somewhere that worrying is like walking around with an umbrella waiting for it to rain. And it rings true. You don't gain anything from constantly reminding yourself of all the negative things people have said to you, of worrying about when you'll mess up again, of waiting for something that may never even happen. All it does is make you unhappy, and life is too short to be unhappy.

So what if someone may not like you? As Dita Von Teese once said, you could be the juiciest peach in the world, and there will still be someone who doesn't like peaches. Let people think whatever they want to think. You do you. And if something bad does happen or you do make an idiot of yourself? Accept it and move on. Don't let a bad moment ruin the rest of your day.

So yes. Things may be quiet at the moment. They may be mundane, ordinary, just a little bit boring. But I have to keep perspective. It isn't permanent. It's just preparation for when I'll be able to do the things I want to do. For when I'll be able to have those adventures I've been dreaming about. And until those dreams come true, I won't care what other people think. I won't worry. I won't let my crazy thoughts take over.

I'll just be going with the flow.
